Tips for turning Sweet Gum Pod Pen Blanks

It is important to note that sweet gum pods are full of natural gaps that can cause air pockets in your blank even when stabilized, placed in resin, and when a pressure pot is used.  The pressure pot is meant to help eliminate air bubbles and squeeze the liquid resin into as many of the gaps as possible. That being said, your blanks may, and likely will, still have air pockets inside.  This is normal and not a defect, but it is something you’ll need to be aware of and workaround. Here are some tips.

Casting Resin Pen Blanks

Pen Blank Label Casting - Solving Common Problems

I originally wrote and published this over at my Etsy spin-off, https://MyWood.Shop as an article titled "What you need to know about label casting pen blanks with casting resin" but I thought the content was just as relevant here on https://PenBlankSales.com so I'm posting it here as well. I've been label casting pen blanks for a while now and have had pretty good luck so far.  Most of the images I print end up looking great and the casting resin turns clear and clean.  Recently, though, I've run into a bit of an issue. Some, not all, of my pen blanks...

About Pen Blank Sales

As a pen turner myself, I began making my own pen blanks and quickly found a lot of love for them on my shop at MyWood.Shop and on Etsy! I got marked as a favorite by many and have a nearly perfect 5 star review history (yes that one 4/5 star review still drives me nuts). Completed pens make up a bulk of my success, though in recent months my custom pen blanks have began to grow in popularity and are now outnumbering my finished pen sales! In order to help pen turners easily find awesome pen blanks, I decided to open...

Learn about Pen Blanks
Learn all about pen blanks, from sizes to bushings, from resins to hybrid pen blanks.

Resin pen blanks combine various types of resin with coloring agents, such as mica powders, pigments, or dyes.  There are many types of resins but some of the most frequently used by pen blank makers and blank casters include casting resins from the following makers:

  • Alumilite
  • Total Boat
  • Liquid Diamonds
  • Royal Palm Resin
  • Eddie Stone Resin

There are also a variety of add-ins you can use to make your otherwise clear resin beautiful. Resin pen blanks can be colored with liquid dyes, pigment powders, metallic powders, and other options.  Some of my favorites to use are:

  • Divine Island pigments
  • Black Diamond pigment powders
  • Eye Candy pigments

Depending on the type of resin you use, they will all have different pour times and temperatures to help achieve maximum color separation.  If casting your own resin pen blanks, you'll need to spend time and resources to experiment, otherwise, leave it to me and pick from these already poured and ready to turn beautiful resin pen blanks!

Hybrid pen blanks are made from a variety of materials combined with casting resins.  Typically I will mix my resin and then pour it into a uniform mold containing the hybrid material.  Once poured, I will then pressure pot the mold to create a pen blank that has as few air pockets and bubbles as possible.

Some of the materials I use to make hybrid pen blanks include:

  • Burl Wood
  • Pinecones
  • Seashells
  • Acorn Caps
  • Bone
  • Antler
  • Cholla Cactus
  • Sweet Gum Pods
  • Banksia Seed Pods
  • Colored Pencils

Over the years, some of the best comments I have received from customers has related to hybrid pen blanks.  The mix of resin and mother nature offers some of the most unique and interesting creations you'll ever see.
